Hello, everyone. As the semester kicks off to a sputtering start, many of you may find it difficult to adjust back to campus life after the summer. Most of you worked a job or took a trip, some of you volunteered your time for a greater cause and some of you took classes to get ahead in your coursework. If you were lucky, you might have made an important self-discovery over the summer. Perhaps you met some new people or picked up a new hobby. Perhaps this summer was a hard time for you. Some of you prepared for your first year of college. Regardless of what befell you this summer, know that all of us at The Vermilion wish you a rewarding and fulfilling fall semester.
Here at The Vermilion, we spent our summer rebranding and redesigning your student newspaper. After making the decision to switch the format, we took it a step further and cleaned up some visual elements. From the new, cleaned-up masthead to the watercolor-inspired Allons header, we worked through the paper and made the changes we saw fit. We feel like this new look is a breath of fresh air. We hope you agree with us. I want to extend a thank-you to Kevin Prejean from Prejean Creative for spending hours helping us with this new design, to our adviser Matthew Tarver and to my wonderful design team without whom none of this would have been possible.
Most importantly, we agreed to refocus the paper on who it serves — the students of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. From campus news to athlete profiles to columns that strike a chord, we want to write content you want to read. We want you to pick up the paper and find high-quality coverage and an outlet for self-expression. Most of all, we want you to feel like this is your paper, because it is. Enjoy!
