The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns’ softball team had a successful start to their 2017 season this past weekend.
The Cajuns won their first game of the season, which gives them a record of 34-3 in season openers. They finished the 31st Annual Louisiana Classics with a 4-2 record.
The Cajuns’ first game was against DePaul University on Friday, Feb. 10. Senior pitcher Alex Stewart kept DePaul hitless for the first four and two-thirds frames of the game. The Cajuns won 9-1.
That evening, freshman pitcher Alyssa Denham made her collegiate debut and allowed only one hit during six innings against Iowa State. The Cajuns won 9-1 again.
Kara Gremillion, sophomore third baseman, had the team-high of 4 runs in both games.
On Saturday Feb. 11 the Cajuns won their third game of the weekend and second game against DePaul with a score of 4-3. Redshirt freshman pitcher Summer Ellyson made her collegiate debut and went four consecutive frames without allowing DePaul to score.
The Cajuns won their second game of the day 7-4 against Ball State.
The Cajuns fell to Southern Mississippi in a doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 12. The first game ended 4-3 and the second game ended 5-3. The Cajuns previously had a 19-game win streak against Southern Mississippi in the all-time series between the two teams.
Senior second base player Haley Hayden and junior outfielder Aleah Craighton each finished tied for team-high honors and led the total for RBIs with six in the tournament.
The Cajuns will play Alabama University in a three-game weekend matchup Feb. 17-19 at Lamson Park.
Returning players for the Roll Tide include their 2016 All-American pitcher, senior Sydney Littlejohn and 2016 SEC-All Freshman catcher, Reagan Dykes.
Alabama finished sixth nationally last season with a record of 51-14.
This past weekend, Alabama went undefeated at the Kickin’ Chicken Classic in Conway, South Carolina.
On Friday Feb. 10 they were victorious against Towson University with a score of 17-0 and Coastal Carolina with a score of 6-0.
On Saturday Feb. 11 Alabama beat Towson University 4-2 and Youngstown State 7-0.
Their final game of the Classic was against Coastal Carolina and they were victorious 9-3.
The Cajuns’ first game against Alabama is Feb. 17 at 5 p.m.
