Softball COVID-19

While the 2020 Ragin Cajuns women’s softball team were on a roll this season with an overall record of 18-6, their season, just like all other spring sports at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, were cut short due to the coronavirus.

The women of this team began their season going 3-1 at the 34th Annual Louisiana Classic in Lafayette, Louisiana at the Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park. The Ragin’ Cajuns went 3-2 against Ball State, 8-0 against UTSA, 1-2 against North Texas and 11-1 in the fifth inning against UTSA.

They continued their season with another four wins against Lamar (8-0 in the 6th inning), North Dakota (9-1 in the fifth inning), Samford (7-0), and Louisiana State University (2-1), leaving them with a five-game winning streak. Unfortunately, however, the LSU Tigers fought back, leaving the Cajuns with a 3-4 loss.

After traveling to Birmingham, Alabama, Louisiana softball started the weekend off a little rocky with a close 0-1 loss against Oklahoma State. Though disappointing, this set fuel to the fire, providing the Cajuns with the energy to take a 3-2 win right back against Oklahoma State. This was just the first game that began another four-game winning streak against Ole Miss (5-3), Ole Miss (8-1) and UAB (7-4).

The traveling didn’t stop for the Cajuns, as they headed straight to Austin, Texas to give another strong appearance against the Texas Longhorns. Louisiana softball showed up strong, leaving them with a 3-2 win, but falling short with a 1-2 loss in their back to back games.

Two short days later, Louisiana softball headed to Gainesville, Florida to play a three-game match-up with the Florida Gators. A rough 0-6 loss for the Cajuns took place on Friday, but a 7-5 win on Saturday and 7-6 win on Sunday trailed it.

After a cancelation against Campbell on March 4, 2020, Louisiana softball was scheduled for another three-game match-up with Coastal Carolina for the Sun Belt Conference games. The results for this weekend were a 1-7 loss, 5-0 win and a 10-2 win in the fifth inning.

Not knowing that it would be their last, Louisiana played two back-to-back midweek games against Sam Houston State, both of which the Cajuns dominated until a rule-rule in the fifth inning. The 4 p.m. game on March 11, 2020 was a 19-0 win for Louisiana, and the 6 p.m. game was a 15-0 win.

While it is disappointing that the season came to a close so quickly, that stats for Louisiana softball were phenomenal, ranking them No. 8 in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 and No. 9 in the Softball Top 25.

The Ragin Cajuns were 2-1 in the Sun Belt Conference, with Senior Pitcher Summer Ellyson being named the Community Coffee Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week. On February 11, 2020, she threw a six-inning perfect game against Lamar, her first career perfect game and fourth career no-hitter.
