The smart ring, an ally for diabetics, will measure blood sugar levels without needles

Monitor your blood sugar 24 hours a day by simply wearing a ring and without having to prick your finger? In 2026 it is no longer science fiction, but an established reality, however blocked by bureaucracy and courts. The technology is available to Samsung which, after launching the much talked about Galaxy Ring in 2024, would be ready, at least from a technical point of view, to produce a second version of its wearable, capable of non-invasively monitoring blood glucose levels. A real revolution for the world of digital health and for those, in particular, who suffer from diabetes and need constant blood sugar monitoring.

The ring that measures blood sugar without needles

How would this revolutionary needle-free measuring device work? The heart of the technology lies in Raman spectroscopy, a technique that identifies materials and molecules based on the inelastic scattering of laser light. To put it another way, the Samsung ring’s built-in sensors will use a low-power laser beam that, passing through the skin, will be able to analyze the chemical composition of the interstitial fluid.

The next step will be managed by Samsung Health’s artificial intelligence, which will translate the signals into glycemic values. According to what was leaked, the clinical tests would have produced precision almost equal to that provided by traditional medical devices. For diabetics it would mean a significant change of pace in daily tests, integrating the management of the disease into a light and design object.

Oura vs Samsung

But as anticipated, the Samsung Galaxy Ring 2 will not see the light so soon, certainly not in 2026. Several analysts in recent months gave the announcement as certain during the next Galaxy Unpacked scheduled for February 25, but the legal battle with Oura, a Finnish company pioneer in the production of smart rings, has ruined the Asian giant’s plans. The accusations of patent infringement made by Europeans against Asians, in fact, forced the lawyers of Suwon (Samsung’s home city) to put the brakes on the production of the new accessories, to avoid commercial blocks at the time of the global launch. On the other hand, the US federal agency (FDA) would have required more rigorous clinical tests.

So when will we see the Samsung Galaxy Ring 2 on the market? No certainties, only rumors that would like the launch not before twelve months, and therefore in the first quarter of 2027. In the meantime, however, the Asian big tech would have already adopted countermeasures: glucose monitoring, in fact, could debut first on the Galaxy Watch 9, whose launch is expected for summer 2026. A solution that is partly convenient for the company, since the greater space guaranteed by the watch case would allow for better calibration of the sensors.

What is certain is that the stakes are very high. In fact, whoever manages to market a tech accessory capable of truly monitoring blood sugar levels with the sole aid of laser sensors will become, at least initially, an unrivaled leader in the world of digital healthcare of the future.
