The government intervenes at the last minute on the high cost of fuel, Salvini: "Discount extended to 10 September"

There will be a new extension of the discount on diesel, then a more far-reaching rule will be launched with aid targeted at specific categories. This is how the Meloni government has decided to act in view of the expiry (September 5) of the last discount granted. The news was confirmed by the minister and deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini on Dritto e Rovescio on Rete 4.

What Salvini said

This time too the government chooses to intervene in the short, very short term. Salvini himself indicates the times: “The current discount will be extended to 10 September, in the meantime the offices are working to understand how to do something in the longer term”. The discount, he explains, “is renewed thanks to the greater collections for mobile excise duties. It will be important that these discounts also concern self-employed workers, VAT numbers, artisans, commercial agents because self-employed workers are not second-class workers compared to employees”.

From a technical point of view, the extension should come with an inter-ministerial decree, while the subsequent intervention for targeted aid should be launched during a Council of Ministers which will presumably be held next week. The Ministry of Economy is studying the possible forms of this sectoral aid and, above all, where to find the funds. The technicians have not even set aside the hypothesis of taxing the extra profits of energy companies, even if the measure seems difficult to pass politically.

Prices rising

Meanwhile, fuel prices continue to rise: petrol has reached 2.039 euros per litre, diesel at 2.147 according to the Observatory of the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy. Codacons points out that, without the tax discount of 17 cents per liter on diesel (14 cents excise duty and 3 cents VAT), diesel fuel would already be 2.3 euros on ordinary roads and almost 2.4 euros on the motorway. For the energy site Staffetta Quotidiana, the average price of petrol is the highest since July 2022. And diesel, if it weren’t for the tax discount, would surpass the record of March 2022, which was 2.229 euros per litre.
