They had noticed the Nvidia brand on two trailers and decided to steal them. The thieves thought they could get their hands on ultra-technological components, such as GPUs and servers, with which to make millions of dollars. Unfortunately for them the loot was much more miserable.
The case
The theft dates back to September 24th and was carried out in California. The target of the gang of thieves were two trailers from PlusAI, a US company that develops autonomous driving systems. Inside, however, there were not expensive Nvidia equipment, which the company supplies to be able to develop its technologies, but rather 9 tons of sand. To test its vehicles PlusAI needs to load the trailers as if they were carrying real weights. Only in this way can the road test come close to what large loads experience during transport.
The trailers were found near the offices of another company, a few hours after the report to the police. “In the ten years the company has been in business, nothing like this has ever happened to us,” said Lauren Kwan, the company’s vice president of marketing. Once the trailers were recovered PlusAI was able to verify that everything was in place. Nothing had been stolen. The thieves, still wanted, will not have been satisfied at all.
