The price of diesel never stops: "In some distributors it is above 3 euros per litre". Here's where it costs the most

The price of diesel continues to weigh on the pockets of Italian motorists, while the protest of hauliers in the south is causing inconvenience throughout Italy. There are active discounts, it’s true, but not all distributors apply the same price lists. Despite the end of the state discount on excise duties, there are still around 5 thousand petrol stations where diesel costs less than 2.20 euros per litre. However, this is only one station in four, while for petrol it is still possible to find prices lower than 2 euros per liter in over half of the stations analysed.

The diesel price today: how much diesel and petrol cost

Facile.it carried out a survey using the latest official data from the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy (Mimit). The finding comes as some oil companies continue to implement price containment initiatives, even after the tax breaks introduced by the government have expired. According to Mimit data updated to Friday 16 October, the average price of diesel in self-service mode on the national road network is 2.256 euros per litre, a slight increase compared to 2.254 euros the previous day.

For petrol, the average price stands at 2.034 euros per litre, slightly down compared to 2.035 euros on 15 October. On the motorway you pay even more: diesel reaches 2.278 euros per litre, while petrol costs on average 2.048 euros. However, the national averages hide significant differences between individual distributors, as emerges from the Facile.it study.

Discounts on diesel, where you pay less than 2.20 euros per litre: the ranking

Facile.it examined over 19,500 distributors on the Italian road network who communicated to Mimit a price update from 5 October onwards, excluding motorways and considering exclusively self-service refueling.

The result is that 5,030 distributors, equal to 26% of the plants analyzed, sell diesel fuel for less than 2.20 euros per litre. The situation changes significantly depending on the region. The Marche region leads the national ranking: here 38% of the petrol stations analyzed charge a price lower than 2.20 euros. Followed by Abruzzo, with 36%, Lazio and Umbria, both at 31%.

The ranking with the lowest prices

At the other extreme are Campania, where only 14% of the plants remain below the threshold, Basilicata (16%) and Calabria (19%).

Petrol under 2 euros per litre: where are the most distributors located

For those who use a petrol car the situation is different. According to Facile.it, 10,223 distributors, equal to 52% of the sample, offered a self-service price of less than 2 euros per litre. The highest percentage is recorded in Valle d’Aosta, where 62% of the plants analyzed remain below this threshold. Followed by Sicily and Marche, both at 60%, and Lazio at 58%.

Also in this case, the regions with fewer distributors below the threshold are Basilicata (36%), Campania (37%) and Calabria (42%).

What happened to the discounts from Eni, IP, Q8 and Tamoil distributors

Eni had announced on 25 September a cap of 2.19 euros per liter for diesel and 1.99 euros for petrol, to be applied initially for 30 days starting from 28 September, with the possibility of extension. Subsequently, IP, Q8 and Tamoil also intervened, with different initiatives and methods.

Dear energy and bonuses, how much do municipalities that host gas and oil wells earn

However, the expiry of the cut in excise duties on diesel on 5 October has changed the picture. Eni adjusted the official maximum price of diesel to 2.25 euros per litre, but on 9 October it again reduced the recommended price to distributors to 2.19 euros. This latter value should not be confused with a guaranteed price in all facilities.
