"Keep 9 liters of water and food at home for 3 days": the British government asks citizens to prepare a survival kit

The British government has invited all citizens of the Kingdom to stock up on possible national emergencies. The campaign, called ‘Be Ready’, was promoted by the British government’s ‘Cabinet Office’ to address an increasingly uncertain global context characterized by climate alarms, technological dependence and threats from hostile states.

The survival kit

The indication is to prepare survival kits at home capable of guaranteeing the autonomy of each family unit for at least 72 hours. According to government guidelines, every British citizen should stock up on nine liters of bottled water and enough food for three days.

Dan Jarvis, the security minister, said “anyone who can follow this advice should do so”. These are, he added, “simple moves to be ready for everyday emergencies” as part of a broader community-wide effort “to improve our resilience as a nation.”

Defense Minister Wes Streeting says the UK must prepare for the threat of “state terrorism” from Russia or other hostile powers. Similar guidelines have also been adopted in the past by other nations such as France, Ireland and the Netherlands. In addition to water and food, the British government recommends keeping a supply of blankets and cash at home, as well as a first aid kit, a torch with batteries and a hand-crank FM radio.

Streeting warned of the dangers of hybrid warfare, calling the threats “not hypothetical, but real.” “It is essential – added the minister – to ask families and businesses: are they prepared? Are they ready? Do they know how to react in the event of daily challenges that may arise?”. The initiative will also be accompanied by a dedicated communication campaign on radio and social channels.
