At least twenty-one people died and twenty-eight were injured in an accident involving a bus on the Dahab-Nuweiba road, Egypt. This is a provisional budget. It happened this morning, Wednesday 2 September. Among the victims there are ten Jordanian citizens. Dozens of ambulances rushed to the scene of the accident, which occurred on the road between the popular tourist resorts of Dahab and Nuweiba on the east coast of South Sinai. It is an area well known for tourism: the city of Dahab is located about an hour’s drive from Sharm el-Sheikh.
It overturned
Authorities said the injured were receiving medical care, but did not specify the cause of the accident. According to an initial reconstruction, the bus would have overturned, probably due to the inadequate conditions of the road surface. The vehicle was carrying a total of 43 people, including 22 Jordanians. The area is a popular tourist destination, known for its marine biodiversity, natural beauty and mountain hiking trails.
5,829 victims in one year
Road accidents are very frequent in Egypt, often attributed to reckless driving, poor vehicle maintenance, poor road conditions and inconsistent enforcement of laws. Last year, 5,829 people died in road accidents across the country, according to Egypt’s state statistics agency.
