Clandestine race between sports cars, thrilling carambola on the pavement: "It could have been a massacre"

A Corvette launched at high speed, the crash into a Mercedes and then the sports car ends up on the pavement, knocking over a man. This is the toll of a violent accident that occurred at dawn on Thursday 20 August in the Inwood neighborhood, in the northern part of Manhattan, in New York. Three people were injured and the police are trying to understand whether an illegal car race was behind the crash.

The Corvette on the pavement and the pedestrian hit

The accident occurred at the intersection of Sherman Avenue and West 204th Street. According to initial reconstruction by the New York police, a Chevrolet Corvette was traveling eastbound on Sherman Avenue at high speed when it collided with a Mercedes-Benz.

The impact was very violent. After the collision, the Corvette lost control, went up the sidewalk and hit a 34-year-old pedestrian, throwing him to the ground, before ending its run next to a building. The images taken by surveillance cameras in the area show the moment the man was hit by the car. The Mercedes, in turn, was pushed off its trajectory and hit some parked vehicles.

Three injured, the driver of the Mercedes escaped

The driver of the Corvette, a passenger who was with him and the struck pedestrian were transported to hospital. According to information released by the police, all three were in stable condition after hospitalization.

The driver of the Mercedes apparently abandoned the vehicle and left the scene of the accident before the officers arrived. The police continue to investigate the dynamics of the crash.

The suspicion of an illegal race

The speed of the cars is one of the aspects on which investigators are focusing. Police are investigating whether, immediately before the crash, the two cars were participating in an illegal race on the streets of Inwood.

Some witnesses heard by the broadcaster 1010 Wins they said they had seen at least one of the vehicles racing at high speed through the streets of the neighborhood before the crash. The footage from the surveillance cameras, together with the conditions of the vehicles and the testimonies collected in the area, will now be able to help the officers reconstruct the speed and movements of the two cars in the seconds preceding the collision.
