Coffee, hit by 44% in 5 years: the ranking of the most expensive cities

Coffee costs more and more, both in the supermarket and at the bar counter. According to Istat surveys prepared by Altroconsumobetween 2021 and 2025 the consumer cost rose by 44%, marking a +21% in the last year alone. In June 2026, data from the Price and Tariff Observatory of the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy show a cup above the euro in all 19 cities monitored.

The ranking of cities

The most expensive is Bolzano with 1.51 euros, followed by Pescara (1.49 euros) and Trieste (1.44 euros). Above 1.30 euros we find Trento (1.41 euros), Turin (1.38 euros), Venice (1.36 euros) and Bologna (1.35 euros). Following are Ascoli Piceno and Florence at 1.28 euros, Milan at 1.27 euros, Palermo and Perugia at 1.26 euros, Naples at 1.24 euros, Genoa and Cagliari at 1.22 euros, Bari at 1.20 euros and Rome at 1.19 euros. At the bottom of the ranking are Aosta with 1.12 euros and Catanzaro, the cheapest on the peninsula, at 1.08 euros.

Increases in household spending

The price increase affected first of all the product purchased in shops for domestic consumption. Statistical findings highlight that after a progressive growth observed between 2022 and 2024, the surge became more rapid during 2025. Although the final value of each package is affected by the industrial processing and packaging phase, the acceleration of retail prices directly reflects the doubling of raw material prices recorded on international markets.

The cup at the bar between price increases and service costs

The price increases do not spare consumption in public places. The comparison between the data for June 2021 and that of June 2026 certifies a general increase of between 15 and 34 cents per cup, equal to an increase of 15-35%. The trend also continued between 2025 and 2026 with further upward adjustments of 3-8 cents. The increase in the number of beans has an impact, however, only in part: an espresso requires around 7 grams of ground coffee and the amount requested at the counter mainly covers management costs, rent, energy and machinery.

The increase

The impact of the markets

The dynamics of global markets are at the origin of the bullish push. For the 2025/2026 season the International Coffee Organization estimates global consumption of 181 million 60 kilo bags. Global production is struggling to keep up with demand due to climate problems affecting large producing countries such as Brazil and Vietnam. The decrease in harvests, combined with financial speculation on future prices, keeps the green coffee ICO index at values more than double compared to 2019.
