Flotilla group stopped in Libya: traces of two Italians lost

A group of activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla were stopped in Sirte, Libya, and their traces have now disappeared. Among them also two Italians, Domenico Centrone and Leonarda Alberizia. “We have lost contact with about ten activists who in Sirte had entered the territory of Libya controlled by Haftar’s authorities – Flotilla spokeswoman Maria Elena Delia told ANSA – The group, with a car and an ambulance, had been invited to negotiate the restart of the Land Convoy. Among them there are also two Italians, one from Puglia and one from Piedmont. According to what we understand so far, they may have been arrested”.

Checks underway by the Farnesina

The Farnesina is verifying the news relating to the Land Convoy delegation – the international caravan of humanitarian aid intended for the population of Gaza, which is located on the border with Eastern Libya – of which traces have been lost and of which two Italian citizens are said to be part.

Sara Suriano, one of the Italian volunteers of the Land Convoy, reported this today in a video, explaining that the mission – after an eight-day stalemate in negotiations with General Haftar’s government, decided today to head towards the border of the eastern zone. In the early afternoon two or three scout vehicles approached the border to reach the eastern part.

After passing an initial checkpoint without difficulty, they continued crossing the border. “A small delegation – it was explained – went further forward and crossed the border because it was called to negotiate by Haftar’s government for the passage of the convoy but, starting from an hour after entering eastern Libya we lost their traces and are unable to get in touch with them”.
