Giovanni Spadolini's Italy. The years of the historian and the journalist (1948-1972). The exhibition for the hundredth anniversary of the birth of the statesman – Carlo Franza's blog

It took place in the premises of the Spadolini Nuova Antologia Library in Pian dei Giullari the inauguration of the second exhibition dedicated to the illustrious Professor Giovanni Spadolini, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birthdedicated to the years in which the future Minister, Head of Government and President of the Senate, he dedicated himself to a journalistic career and to teaching history between 1948 and 1972.

“These are “convenient” dates because the Professor was always a historian and journalist – commented Professor Cosimo Ceccuti, president of the Spadolini Nuova Antologia Foundation -, throughout his entire life. If the day of his graduation closed the first section of the exhibition set up between 2023 and 2024, the second focuses attention on the years between 1948 and March 1972, with his departure from the direction of Corriere della Sera and entry into political life. Just like the ownership of teaching at the Florentine Faculty of Political Sciences “Cesare Alfieri”, goes from taking office in 1950 to passing away in 1994, despite having been on unpaid leave from teaching since 1968, a few months after taking over as director of the Corriere della Sera.”

Twenty-five years during which the two Spadolini “souls” are inextricably intertwined, as demonstrated by the exhibitiontion in the rooms of the Library in Pian dei Giullari. The “Napoleonic” journalistic experience, which began with Messenger and then the Corriere della Sera by Mario Missiroli, The World by Mario Pannunzio ed Era by Alberto Mondadori and other occasional collaborations. So the great directions, Il Resto del Carlino of Bologna, from 1955 to 1968, the Corriere della Serafrom 1968 to 1972, and – for cultural journalism – the New Anthologywhich in fact lasted for forty years, from 1955 to death.

The minister inaugurated the exhibition Matteo Piantedosi: “I am very happy with this day at Pian dei Giullari – were his words -, and with having been called to this celebration with great honor because for me Spadolini represents an important moment in the history of our culture, that is to say the fundamental traits of his thought were to imagine a culture that participated in the creation of a national identity. A culture that should also be disseminated and transmitted to the working class and not just reserved to the most restricted circles.”

Minister Piantedosi, accompanied by the event’s patroness Sara Riffeser Monti and by the institutions present – the mayor Sara Funarothe deputy mayor Paola Galganithe prefect Francesca Ferrandinothe deputy commissioner Giovanni Pampilloniathe rector Alessandra Petrucci and high military officials – visited the exhibition, stopping to observe each of the display cases and having Cosimo Ceccuti tell him the anecdotes hidden behind the photographic shots that portrayed the Professor during those years.

And today, on the occasion of the exhibition, I also want to remember him not only as a friend and colleague, but above all because in 1974 he was the main promoter of the birth of the Ministry for Cultural and Environmental Heritage of which he was Minister from 23 November 1974 to 12 February 1976 in the 4th Moro Government.

The exhibition will remain open to the public with free entry from Monday to Thursday (from 10am to 1pm and from 3pm to 5pm), until the end of June 2025, in the spaces of the Spadolini Nuova Antologia Library (Via del Pian dei Giullari 36A).
