"It's a defense tactic"

An editorial by Paul Honeys triggers a somewhat piqued reaction from I guide Little cross. The point of contention is the Ukrainian offensive in Russia, with the Kursk region now occupied by Kiev troops while Putin promises revenge but is currently unable to stop the advance of Zelensky’s tanks. In recent days, in fact, the Italian Minister of Defense had wondered what the objectives of the Ukrainian ally were and above all had assured that no Italian weapon would fire a single shot beyond the Russian border. A red line shared neither by the United States (“It is up to Kiev to decide on this offensive”) nor by the European Union (“Ukraine has the right to attack the enemy wherever it deems necessary”).

According to Mieli, Crosetto had in fact equated the Russian invasion with the Ukrainian one, stating that “no country should invade another country” since “the conflict becomes even more severe if it moves onto Russian territory” and “further and further distances the possibility of a ceasefire”. “In other words – wrote Mieli – Ukraine has no right at all to attack the enemy (as claimed USA and Europe) “wherever it deems necessary” but must fight only within its own borders. Otherwise Ukraine is guilty of having prevented any prospect of peace”. And again: “To imply that these are two “invasions” comparable or in any case judged by the same yardstick is not fair. Moreover, to do so in this manner, where Europe, Great Brittany (yesterday with a resolute statement by Prime Minister Keir Starmer) and States United take clearly different positions, it is yet another demonstration that Italy proves, in difficult times, not to be a reliable ally”.

For Crosetto “it is difficult to accept the judgments expressed in a crude way that result in absurd provocations, malicious reconstructions of a Meloni who would have called me to reprimand me”. “If I have expressed a judgment on the Ukrainian tactics – he adds in the letter to Courier – it is because it is my duty to question myself to ask myself whether this choice helps or weakens the Ukrainian cause. Friends, true friends, do not always say you are right. Their task is to help reflect. And we are true friends of the Ukrainians. Not supporters of manner, or out of deference to political correctness, as many have seen in recent years. And in fact I have shared my concerns with my colleagues from other nations and from Bornas I always do, and with my Ukrainian counterparts, as has happened in the past. Because I think my job is to say what I think and what I think is right and not what my interlocutors want to hear.”

Meanwhile, military operations continue. Kiev is satisfied with the advance into enemy territory, but assures that it has no intention of annexing a piece of Russia. The spokesman for the US National Security Council, John Kirby, instead attacks Moscow: “If the Ukrainian offensive in the Russian region of Kursk Putin doesn’t like it, if it makes him a little uncomfortable, then there’s a simple solution: he can leave Ukraine and be done with it.”

With regard to the use of Italian weapons in Russiathe problem for the Minister of Defense is not just a question of opportunity. But of regulations. “I know what we are talking about, how they are used, who authorizes their use, how each decision-making and use dynamic occurs. I know, just as I know the Italian regulations that regulate it. Different from those of other nations. Probably inadequate to face the moment we are living, as I had the opportunity to say in Parliament and at the Supreme Council of Defense”.
