Merz arrives unexpectedly in Kiev and a drone hits the North Bridge: "If Russia isn't stopped it will be our turn"

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s surprise arrival in Kiev coincides with a Russian attack on the Ukrainian capital. “This morning the Russians hit the Pivnichnyi Bridge again with a drone” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, adding that in Sumy one person was killed in the attack on a pharmaceutical warehouse, while in Dnipro a communications structure was targeted. “Due to these attacks – Zelensky announced -, six people were injured”.

“Overnight, the Russians launched 135 attack drones against Ukraine, more than 50 of them jets,” Zelensky wrote in the message posted on his social media channels. “The regions of Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Sumy and Zaporizhzhia were targeted. And among the main targets of these terrorists, as always, are ordinary residential buildings, critical infrastructure – everything that makes up normal daily life. There are power outages in some communities. Our services are working at the impact sites.”

A video posted by the Ukrainian president shows the moment of the drone’s impact on the Pivnichnyi Bridge also known as the North Bridge of the capital.

Merz’s visit: 1.3 billion for Kiev

Merz arrived in Kiev by train. Zelensky made it known that together they will sign “decisions to ensure greater defense capabilities for Ukraine and all of Europe”. “The German Chancellor is the leader of a country that consistently demonstrates leadership in the effort to protect the lives of Ukrainians from Russian raids,” Zelensky stressed, expressing gratitude.

According to German government sources cited by Reuters, the package includes one billion euros in military assistance and another 350 million euros for the repair of energy infrastructure, a frequent target of Moscow’s raids. Merz and Zelensky are also expected to finalize agreements today for the joint production of several drone models.

“I’m here because Ukraine needs all our support in the coming weeks,” Merz said in a press release. “If Russia is not stopped, its war machine will sooner or later turn against us.”
