Servants of the Gleba - Il Giornale

The good news is always halfway. In fact, on the tax evasion front we are happy to know that the government has recovered the record figure of 33.4 billion euros in 2024, a sum never reached in the history of the country. But then the despair takes over when we think that unfortunately all this, for the citizen, will not translate neither in greater services nor in a lowering of the “tax burden”, a strange expression that politicians use to indicate state choker.

The point is that it is not true (we repeat: it is not true) that “if we pay everyone, we would pay less”. If this were the case, today, after the mega-record of unpaid taxes, each of us should receive from the Revenue Agency a bank transfer corresponding to the ruled sum divided the number of taxpayers. Which will not happen. If we pay everyone, we will not pay less at all: if anything, the state will have more money. Maybe to waste. The test is that for years the evasion decreases, the taxes no.

Now. We don’t understand much of economics. But something of history yes. And we know that in ancient times the “tenth” was the part of the income that the farmer had to the Church. And sharecropping is the contract on the basis of which the farmer sold half the crop to the owner.

We are therefore talking about taxes between 10 and 50%, which for which in the history manuals we speak of “servants of the gleba”. Today we pay more than 50%, and call us taxpayers.

No. Taxes are not “a beautiful thing” as that such said. That in fact collected them.
