Small comforting signals are arriving from Havana regarding Alessandro Di Battista’s condition. The former deputy of the 5 Star Movement is still hospitalized in Cuba after the surgery which became necessary on Saturday 5 September, when the planned transfer to Italy was canceled at the last moment.
According to sources close to Di Battista, the operation was successful. It is the first positive element after the worsening of the conditions which had pushed the doctors at the Hermanos Ameijeiras hospital in Havana to abandon the trip to Rome and to intervene immediately.
Di Battista is currently sedated and hospitalized in intensive care, a condition which, according to available reconstructions, should be maintained for a few more days. Only subsequently will it be possible to more precisely evaluate the body’s response to the operation and therefore the post-operative course.
Other encouraging signs have also arrived in the last few hours: some of the parameters monitored by doctors appear to be normal. However, these are rumors and not an official health bulletin, which is why friends and people close to the former parliamentarian urge maximum caution.
“We await the evolution of events”, is the line that filters from Di Battista’s entourage. The focus is mainly on what will happen once the sedation ends. The situation remains delicate and no one, at the moment, wants to venture predictions on recovery times.
The Schierarsi association, founded by Di Battista, had also asked in recent days for “maximum discretion and prudence in the dissemination of information”, underlining the need to respect the privacy of the former deputy and his family.

It is therefore still early to establish when he will be able to return to Italy. The transfer by air ambulance, initially scheduled for Saturday, was canceled after his condition worsened. According to some sources close to Di Battista, his stay in Cuba could last for several weeks, up to about a month after the operation.
A forecast that, for now, remains only indicative. Everything will depend on the evolution of the clinical picture in the next few days and on Di Battista’s response to the operation.
