UK crackdown on pornography. From November 6th the ban on possessing and disseminating certain types of videos and images will come into effect. Three types are banned: strangulations or suffocations, images that represent real or simulated incestuous relationships by actors and those that depict people who are under 16 or pretend to be minors. The provision provides for penalties of up to five years in prison for the publication of this content, and up to three years for possession.
The three types of porn prohibited by law
The government’s decision is based on the study presented to Parliament according to which scenes of suffocation were very recurrent on pornographic sites and were contributing to “normalizing” this practice among young people.
Since 2025, the Online Safety Act has been in force in the United Kingdom, a law that has introduced very effective online age verification systems, so as to effectively prevent minors from accessing those sites. The provision concerns not only web spaces such as Pornhub and YouPorn, but also social platforms, forums such as Reddit and dating apps such as Grindr.
