There was a very serious fire at the Wainwright military base in Alberta in western Canada. We know that there are at least seven dead and dozens injured, but an official toll has not yet been provided. Silence also on the possible causes. Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty speaks of the “worst accident in recent times”. According to what was reported by the CBC broadcaster, the flames broke out in an area reserved for military training.
“Our thoughts are with all the brave women and brave men involved,” Prime Minister Mark Carney said.
A catastrophic blast at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, Alberta has reportedly resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries during a live fire military training operation.
According to local sources on base, Canadian Forces personnel had been conducting exercises over several days when an artillery projectile reportedly struck an active natural gas well on the bombing range, triggering a massive detonation.
The blast is said to have leveled nearby tactical training buildings, with subsequent fires reaching munitions storage and setting off secondary detonations across the range.
The geography and infrastructure;
➟ CFB Wainwright has a documented history of natural gas production, with approximately 180 wells reported on the military property in 2014.
➟ Military range maps identify munitions storage, pipelines and designated live fire danger areas near Peterson Pond.
➟ NASA FIRMS satellite imagery recorded multiple thermal hotspots between Peterson Pond and Jamieson Lake on October 17.
Local accounts also describe hospitals activating Code Orange protocols, mobilizing stretchers and preparing for a significant influx of casualties.
The reported gas well strike, secondary detonations and hospital emergency measures remain unconfirmed as authorities investigate the incident.
Should these reports be confirmed, my thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved and affected.

Devastating fire at military base
We know that a fire broke out and that due to strong gusts of wind, estimated at up to 100 km per hour, the flames quickly overtook the perimeter of the structure and spread to the territory. Firefighters from several jurisdictions rushed to the scene. An emergency coordination center has been set up in the area and the municipal district has issued an appeal to citizens: “Avoid the area and leave the roads free for emergency vehicles. Do not head towards the accident site and do not try to get closer to observe it”.
No details on the cause of the fire were provided. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said officers were alerted shortly after 4pm local time on Saturday following reports of a fire in a training area on the base.

Alberta Governor Danielle Smith described the fire as “serious and tragic,” noting that it affected numerous military personnel.
“This is a higher number of patients than any of us would like to count right now. It is a disaster. It is a disaster that occurs once every 15-25 years”, the words of Warren Thirsk, emergency room doctor at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, the capital of Alberta, interviewed by the CBC. The doctor explained that code orange has been activated in Edmonton, to assist the high number of patients. According to Thirsk, Wainwright’s health facilities have been “completely overwhelmed” by the number of people needing treatment.
Hospitals across Alberta, Canada are reportedly being overwhelmed by the number of injured from the ongoing major fire at CFB Wainwright, the cause and extent of which is still unknown, with details being kept very quiet by the Canadian Ministry of National Defence. Some sources place the number of dead in the dozens with hundreds of injuries, though nothing has been verified by officials in Canada.

The Canadian Forces base is located in Denwood, Alberta, approximately 250 kilometers from the provincial capital, Edmonton. According to the Canadian government website, it is one of the most active military bases in the country: it hosts the Canadian Maneuver Training Center and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre. In the first, realistic exercises are conducted in battle scenarios, while military training takes place in the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre.
“I express deep condolences for the victims of the tragic fire at the Canadian military base in Wainwright, Alberta, and I am close to the injured and their families. My solidarity with the women and men of the Canadian Armed Forces affected by this tragedy. Italy is close to the Government and people of Canada”, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani wrote on X.
