Before leaving for Alabama, speaking to journalists at the White House, Donald Trump said that his relationship with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni “is very good”. “I like her and I have always liked her,” the tycoon replied to a question from journalists about his past attacks on the Prime Minister.
The relationship between Meloni and Trump
The disagreements between Trump and Meloni had worsened in recent months, especially over the war in Iran and Italy’s role in the Strait of Hormuz: the US president had accused the Italian prime minister of not having sufficiently supported the American position. In June, Trump had also personally attacked Meloni, contesting her behavior at the G7, defining her as a sort of “fan looking for a photo with him”. The prime minister had rejected the accusations, but tried to avoid repercussions on relations between Rome and Washington.
The US president then praised Europe for agreeing to release large quantities of diesel from its reserves. “It was exceptional,” said the tycoon, who also confirmed that he would not impose a ban on the export of diesel, saying that this measure was “never really taken into consideration”.
