When to buy detergents and household products: the golden days to save (and those to avoid)

When shopping for home care and cleaning products, it is easy to get lost when faced with the wide choice available on the market. In fact, there are products on the market designed for every type of need and, sometimes, identifying what is really needed to keep a home always clean is more complex than you think. It can therefore be useful to have a sort of “starting base”, with the essential products to keep at home. Without neglecting the living room and bedrooms, it is important to pay great attention to two home environments: the bathroom and the kitchen.

Both, in fact, tend to accumulate a greater quantity of bacteria and germs than other rooms in the house. In the bathroom there must never be a lack of sanitiser for the sanitary fixtures, drain cleaner to clear the drains and limescale remover for taps and surfaces. The latter is also useful in the kitchen, where dish detergent, dishwasher detergent and degreaser are essential in the pantry. To complete the basic equipment there are multipurpose detergents and rubbish bags. It is no coincidence that the Netflix series “Maid” (2021) also told the story of the world of domestic cleaning, showing how much effort it takes to keep a clean house.

Everything you need for cleaning

The list of essential products, of course, can be expanded based on the specific needs of each home. And why not make household chores a little more pleasant too? In the background you can choose one of the Spotify playlists dedicated to cleaning, perhaps with songs like “I want to break free” (1984), by the timeless Queen. In the famous video of the song, inspired by the British soap opera “Coronation Street”, the late Freddie Mercury plays the role of a desperate and rebellious housewife, wearing a teased black wig, a pink slip and an apron, while cleaning the house with a vacuum cleaner.

But, once you have decided what to put in the cart, a question remains that is anything but secondary, especially for those who are looking at their wallet: which days of the week can you save the most on the purchase of hygiene and home cleaning products? And which ones would be best avoided? Let’s try to answer this double question, distinguishing real savings opportunities from false myths and clichés.

The offers of the main brands

Sponges, cloths and rags specific for the bathroom or kitchen are “must haves”, as are the brush with bucket and wringer. And again, the broom and the dustbin, the vacuum cleaner and the electric broom, just to name a few. However, they are tools that must be accompanied by specific products for cleaning and hygiene of the home: among these, laundry detergent and items useful for washing machine maintenance, from detergent for deep cleaning of clothing to limescale remover, essential to help maintain the efficiency and functionality of the appliance. To purchase them at more convenient prices, large-scale retail chains, such as Aldi, offer new promotions on Mondays, Thursdays and weekends.

Other specialized chains, such as Risparmio Casa, which has over 180 points of sale in Italy and also a presence abroad, work above all with periodic leaflets, often dedicated specifically to laundry, detergents, cleaning and hygiene. In the case of Risparmio Casa, but the same applies to other large-scale distribution of home care products, such as Happy Casa Store, Maury’s and Tigotà, the advice is to check the promotions online, rather than on a single day, and to check when the product you want to purchase enters the promotional window of the store.

Every season has its opportunity

It being understood that in specialized sales points it is always possible to find low-cost products, such as those of Tedi, a German group present with 3,800 branches in 15 European countries, where on the site a window cleaning set costs 5 euros and a fragrance diffuser 4 euros, for washing machine detergents there are instead very attractive periods of the year to save money. Among these, the beginning of spring, between March and April, the end of spring and the beginning of summer, between May and June; but also the end of summer and the beginning of autumn, between August and September. Bathroom detergents, degreasers, floor and surface products are often the protagonists of spring and summer promotional campaigns, but they also return in autumn offers.

The same goes for dish detergent: the opportunities are distributed quite evenly, but the spring campaigns, the end of spring and the end of summer promotions show a frequent presence of products on offer. Without forgetting that, during autumn, these brands often propose campaigns and initiatives related to Black Fridayone of the most important commercial events of the year, in which laundry and dishwasher detergents, fabric softeners, surface cleaners and garbage bags may appear.

How the Lidl calendar works

From toilet cleaner to dishwashing liquid to multi-purpose gloves: there are numerous hygiene and home cleaning products on sale on the Lidl website. We asked the Schwarz Group company itself whether there are days on which it is preferable to purchase certain items. This is the response to The Vermilion: “Given that we strive every day to offer high quality products at the best price throughout the week, the attention to convenience is constant and is enhanced by our promotional calendar, which includes Thursday as the launch day for the weekly offers”.

A choice, the latter, “designed to align with consumers’ purchasing habits in view of the weekend and make the moment of shopping even simpler”. The German company, which opened its first point of sale in Italy in 1992, in Arzignano, in the Vicenza area, adds that “this day is accompanied by Monday as a further key programming hub, thanks to the activation of promotions dedicated to the beginning of the week”. Without forgetting that, “to allow customers to plan their spending in total transparency, we make the preview of the flyer available for consultation a few days in advance via our official digital channels, such as the Lidl Plus app, the website and the newsletter”.
