A group of researchers discovered a new species of deep coral in the western Pacific, characterized by a singular “hairy” aspect. It is no coincidence that the scientists wanted to call him Iridogorgia Chewbacca, in honor of the well -known character of the Star Wars saga, the Wookie made famous by his thick hair.
Iridogorgia Chewbacca, the new species of coral discovered in the Pacific
The new species was described in a study published in the magazine Zootoxa by Les Watling, professor emeritus the University of Hawaii Mānoa. “Seeing this coral for the first time was unforgettable – Watling said in a press release issued by the University -. His long and flexible branches and his form immediately reminded me of Chewbacca. Even after years of research in the sea depths, discovered like this still make me stop and reflect”.
In reality, the presence of this particular coral had already been reported in the past, but only now the scientists managed to ascertain that it was a distinct species. After several research, including genetic analysis and field shipments, experts have confirmed its uniqueness, officially recognizing it as a new species. Despite the majestic appearance, the size of the specimens documented up to now slightly exceeds the meter in height, while the “soft” branches floating from the main body reach about 40 centimeters.

A discovery that shows how some areas for some time has also been studied for some time, such as the Pacific, can still reserve incredible surprises.
