Petrol and diesel prices continue to rise. The data published on the website of the Ministry of Business shows a new leap forward for diesel fuel which, compared to yesterday’s findings, increases by another 5 cents. In detail, a liter of diesel in self mode today costs 1.872 euros, while petrol rises more slowly, stopping at 1.745.
Methodological note: these values were obtained by calculating the arithmetic mean of the regional averages communicated to Mimit. The national weighted average (which takes into account the volume of delivery and the number of plants) could give slightly different results, but without changing the substance much. To be clear, we are talking about deviations that can be in the order of fractions of a cent.
The diesel race doesn’t stop
Only the day before yesterday the price of diesel stood at €1.756/litre (always calculated with the simple average), and then jumped to 1.820 and finally to 1.87 today. In the last three days, to give an idea, the increase has been around 14 cents per litre. Which translates into 7 euros more to fill up a car with a 50-litre tank.
| Fuel (Self) | Media Yesterday (4/03) | Media Today (5/03) | Net increase |
| Diesel | €1,820/l | €1.872/l | +5.2 cents |
| Gas | €1,728/l | €1.745/l | +1.7 cents |
The increase in petrol is much more limited, recording +1.7 cents compared to yesterday, a sign that speculation and fear of blockades in the Middle East are focusing on the fuel used for heavy transport.
The gap between green fuel and diesel fuel today is on average over 12 cents, not huge but still not exactly a marginal difference if we consider that in December, before the realignment of excise duties, the situation was completely reversed.
Where filling up costs more
The Mimit data show strong disparities between the different areas of the country with the increases being felt especially in the “Alpine” regions and in the North-East, while in Central Italy the price lists are lower on average, although still rising sharply compared to recent days, as well as in the Southern regions. The cost of petrol is low, in self-service mode, in the individual regions.

So far the regional averages. In reality, in many distributors, especially at the service level, diesel has already cost over 2 euros per litre. And on the motorway network the psychological threshold of 2 euros is very close even if you don’t rely on the “service”.

The Ministry of Business warns “Mr prices”
Meanwhile, the government is moving to avoid speculation. According to what Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reported this morning, Business Minister Urso “has activated the monitoring system which is activated to verify whether there are anomalous and unjustified increases in prices, in particular at the petrol pump and on food”.
This is the Price Surveillance Guarantor, nicknamed Mr. Prices by the media, a mechanism that cross-references daily data from distributors with international oil prices to understand if speculation is taking place. If the price of fuel is too high compared to the market cost, the ministry can summon the oil companies to ask for explanations or report the “anomalies” to other control authorities.
