More violence in Turkish schools. A shooting occurred in the south-east of the country, in the province of Kahramanmarascaused at least four deaths and around twenty injuries, some of whom were in critical condition.
The attack occurred around 1.30pm local time inside the Ayser Çalık middle school, in the Onikişubat neighborhood. According to what was reported by the broadcaster NTVan armed individual broke into the institute and opened fire in at least two classrooms.
The toll: four dead, twenty injured and minutes of pure horror
The toll, still provisional, speaks of four victims: three students and a teacher. Around twenty people were injured, with at least four people hospitalized in serious conditions. The local prefect, Mükerrem Ünlüer, also confirmed the presence of victims.
According to initial reconstructions, the attacker was a student of the same school. After shooting in several classrooms, he would have been stopped by school staff – probably by the principal or a teacher – and subsequently arrested by the police.
The episode comes less than 24 hours after another shooting occurred in south-eastern Turkey, in a high school, where a gunman injured 16 people before taking his own life. Two close episodes that rekindle the alarm about safety in the country’s schools.
The authorities have launched an investigation to clarify the dynamics of the events and the reasons for the attack, while tension remains high in the area.
