Bomb explodes as a bus passes by: massacre in Colombia

At least 14 dead and 38 injured. This is the dramatic outcome of the bomb attack that occurred on a road in southwestern Colombia, a country shocked by a series of attacks just over a month before the presidential elections.

The attack in Colombia

The toll, which unfortunately could get worse, was confirmed on social media by the governor of the Cauca department, Octavio Guzma’n: “At the moment, we count 14 dead and more than 38 injured, including 5 minors”. According to initial information, the bomb exploded on the Pan-American highway in the El Túnel sector, in Cajibío, just as a bus with dozens of passengers on board was passing by. The incident occurred in the Cauca region, a traditional stronghold of armed groups, and damaged over a dozen vehicles.

The commander of the Colombian armed forces told journalists that it was a “terrorist act” and blamed the network of a man known as “Iván Mordisco”, one of Colombia’s most wanted figures, and Jaime Martínez’s faction. Both are dissidents of the now-defunct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia that operate in the region and neither respects the peace agreement signed with the state in 2016. The attack was the latest in a series of explosions that have sought to target public infrastructure.
