Attack on dinner with Trump: the attacker left California to attack. The president: "The White House needs a ballroom"

A planned trip to cross the United States, entry into one of the most exclusive events in American politics and a specific objective: to attack members of the administration. New details emerge about the attempted attack on the traditional White House correspondents’ dinner, where a man opened fire among those present and security forces were forced to evacuate Trump and members of the administration present. An episode that reignites the debate on security in institutional events.

Traveling from California to target members of the administration

According to interim Justice Minister Todd Blanche, the attacker followed a complex and premeditated path. The man left California, crossed the country by train to Chicago, and then reached Washington. Once he arrived in the capital, he managed to fit in among the guests of the gala by regularly checking into the hotel hosting the event.

A strategy that suggests preparation and a desire to evade controls, taking advantage of the public – albeit selective – nature of the dinner. Again according to the Department of Justice, there was no random target in the crosshairs: the declared objective was representatives of the Trump administration present at the evening.

A targeted and symbolic plan

The chosen context is not secondary. The White House Correspondents’ Dinner represents one of the most visible events in American political life, with the participation of journalists, government officials and public figures. Striking in that context would have had a strong media and symbolic impact.

The long and non-immediate journey, combined with the ability to access the event without arousing suspicion, reinforces the hypothesis of a carefully planned, rather than improvised, action. The network of possible contacts and the underlying motivations of the attacker now remain at the center of the investigation.

Trump’s message on Truth about the Presidential Ballroom

A few hours after the event, Donald Trump intervened with a long message on Truth, directly linking the episode to the issue of White House security.

“What happened last night is exactly why our great Armed Forces, the Secret Service, and every President for the last 150 years have called for the construction of a secure grand ballroom within the White House complex,” he wrote.

Trump’s post on Truth after the attack

The president argued that the attack would not have occurred if the new ballroom – currently under construction and described as “military top secret” – was already operational. According to Trump, the facility will be equipped with the most advanced security systems and designed to prevent unauthorized access, being within the perimeter of “the most secure building in the world”.

There was no shortage of political and legal attack: Trump harshly criticized a lawsuit brought against the ballroom project by a “lady who walked her dog”, calling it “ridiculous” and lacking legal legitimacy. “It must be withdrawn immediately. Nothing must interfere with its construction,” he added, underlining that the work is ahead of schedule and within budget.

Security under review

The episode now raises questions about the management of security at events involving high-ranking officials, especially when they take place outside fully controlled structures such as the White House. Investigations continue to clarify any flaws in the controls and to reconstruct in detail the attacker’s intentions.

Meanwhile, the matter is part of an already tense political climate, destined to fuel new controversies over presidential security and the administration’s infrastructural choices.
