The president of the United States and the Italian prime minister could be close to a reconciliation. In recent weeks, diplomatic relations between Washington and Rome have been very tense due to Donald Trump’s invectives and his threats to withdraw the deployed US soldiers from our country. The tycoon now seems interested in mending ties with Italy and the government: this would be the objective of Marco Rubio’s trip. The US Secretary of State is expected next week in the capital where he will have some bilateral talks with Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Defense Minister Guido Crosetto. Before meeting members of the government, Rubio will see Pope Leo XIV.
Trump threatens to withdraw US troops from Italy: “You were useless in the war in Iran”
The agenda
It will be a two day visit. Rubio will arrive in Rome on May 7, will stay overnight and finally leave the capital the day after finishing the round of meetings that await him. The tycoon will send his secretary of state to restore relations with the Vatican and the Holy Father. Which has been attacked several times in the tycoon’s outings: “terrible in foreign policy”, “weak against crime”, “he doesn’t understand the situation in Iran”. Not to mention the offenses against the Christian world with the images generated with artificial intelligence in which Trump represented himself as the new Jesus Christ. Rubio will also meet with the secretary of state of the Holy See Pietro Parolin.
On May 8, Rubio’s Roman “trip” includes a summit with Minister Tajani and then an extended lunch with Minister Crosetto. But it is not certain that the US Secretary of State will leave without having met Prime Minister Meloni. “I want to see it,” Rubio let out. And a bilateral meeting between the two is eagerly awaited by Palazzo Chigi, the victim of Trump’s barbs several times: “I’m not happy with them. It’s fine for them if Iran has atomic weapons. Anyone who tolerates Iran possessing a nuclear weapon is not very intelligent”, he said speaking of Rome and Madrid.
