NATO is said to have organized several meetings with screenwriters, directors and film and television producers to promote propaganda in favor of the Atlantic bloc. This is what emerges from an investigation carried out by Guardian according to which the alliance held three meetings, in Los Angeles, Brussels and Paris. The “series of informal conversations”, as they are described by the British newspaper, is expected to continue in June with a meeting in London.
The meeting in London
The Atlantic Alliance for the London event invited screenwriters who are members of the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain which represents professional writers in the United Kingdom. The meeting will take place on the basis of the so-called Chatham House rule, a prestigious independent think tank: participants are free to use the information received, but the identity of those present is not revealed. The topic of discussions will be “the evolving security situation in Europe and beyond”.
According to the Guardianthe occasion aroused strong concern among some of the guests who had the impression of having been called to “contribute to propaganda for NATO”.
In an email from Wggb, seen by Guardianit is suggested that meetings between the filmmakers and Nato have already led to the development of “three distinct projects”, which have been “inspired, at least in part, by these conversations”.
The goal
The first meeting was held in Brussels in 2024. Eight screenwriters, including a writer and executive producer of the sitcom Friends, were invited to NATO headquarters by the Washington-based Center for strategic and international studies.
The think tank Center for European reform published a report in early 2026 urging governments to involve cultural leaders in their countries to build public support for greater military spending and to “better explain why these defense investments are necessary”.
