The new cut in excise duties on fuel starts today, May 2nd, and will last until May 10th. We can read it in the decree published in the Official Journal, which indicates a shorter period than the date of May 21st announced in the official press release after the launch of the measure. From what we learn, a ministerial decree will then extend the tax reduction until May 22nd. The double passage is justified with “procedural reasons”.
The discount
The text published in the Gazzetta confirms the extension for the 20 cent cut on the price of diesel and reduces the drop in excise duties for petrol to 5 cents, with an impact of around 6 cents if VAT is considered.
However, the government had spoken of a reduction for three weeks. Codacons requests “immediate clarification on the real duration of the cut” underlining “the concrete risk that, in light of the published decree, starting from next May 11th the price of diesel will rise again above 2.3 per litre, placing Italy at the top of the European diesel price ranking”.
According to government sources, a ministerial decree will extend the tax reduction until May 22nd. The second intervention will arrive when the availability of resources deriving from the VAT extra revenue on fuels has been quantified, expected within approximately ten days.
