Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan sign a common defense agreement: "If they attack one, they attack all"

August 7, 2026 will be a day that will go down in history. In Mecca, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan signed a mutual defense agreement should they come under attack. An agreement that is inspired by Article 5 of NATO, of which Ankara is part, and other pacts signed by alliances of countries in the past. In summary: if one of these states suffers an attack, the others will be called upon to defend it.

The signature

What has already been dubbed as the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, was signed by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif. “The agreement aims to strengthen collective deterrence against any act of aggression,” Islamabad’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement. The document states that “any armed attack against any of the three states will be considered an attack against all three.” However, the text is not yet public, so it is not yet known exactly how it will work on a practical level.

The consequences

A pact between these three states is no small thing. Each of them is involved in regional conflicts or tensions. In the spring of 2025, a terrorist attack in Indian Kashmir reignited the crisis with Pakistan. New Delhi launched some cross-border missile attacks, to which Islamabad responded.

Saudi Arabia has been at the center of Iranian drone swarms for months with the outbreak of conflict between Tehran, Tel Aviv and Washington. More recently, the crazy variable of the Houthis and their blockade of Saudi boats transiting the Red Sea has been added.

Turkey, in addition to the internal question of the Kurds, wants to become the hegemonic state in the Middle East. However, Israel is on its own path and wants to protect its position by clashing with the Muslim front which has made the Palestinian cause its own, also from a geopolitical perspective.
