Upon returning from summer holidays, Italian families could find a nasty surprise. According to Nomisma Energia estimates, calculated on the basis of current wholesale prices, bill increases are expected in September which will increase annual expenses by 23% for families and 54% for businesses.
Electricity and gas bills, new increases
According to what Il Sole 24 Ore reports, the estimates are based on a prudential weighted average calculated starting from the price of the gas raw material communicated by Arera for vulnerable customers (the latest figure, referring to last July, was 60 cents per cubic meter). The 137 cents per cubic meter expected for September, compared to 106 in September 2025, would entail an additional expense of 429 euros for a typical family at the end of 2026, with an increase of 29%. Gas price increases are also directly influencing electricity rates.
Nomisma Energia estimates a bill cost of 31.93 cents per kWh for September (compared to 28.75 in the same period of the previous year), an increase that will force the typical family unit to pay 85.9 euros more at the end of 2026, marking a +11% on 2025. By adding the two utilities, the overall increase at the end of the year will reach 515 euros (+23%).
Sting for families and businesses
On the fuel front, Nomisma Energia calculated an average of 2.017 euros per liter for September. For a family this translates into an extra annual outlay of 361.8 euros (+22% compared to 2025) which, added to the increase in bills, brings the total bill of increases to 876.8 euros more.
The impact will also be severe for businesses. Nomisma Energia estimates a gas price of 71 cents per cubic meter for September (compared to 43 in September 2025). For a typical company with high consumption, the increase at the end of 2026 could be decidedly onerous. As regards electricity, the same company could find itself paying 12,713 euros more at the end of the year (+7% compared to 2025).
