Shein sinks in the stock market: contact lenses recalled due to bacteria

Contact lenses sold by Shein have been urgently recalled in Australia and New Zealand due to bacterial contamination.

The stock market crash

In recent hours, the news has weighed on the shares of the Chinese fast fashion giant, which collapsed by almost 10% on the Hong Kong stock exchange. According to a statement released by New Zealand’s Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, “a sample of these contact lenses tested positive for Burkholderia cepacia complex, a bacterial contaminant detected in the solution in which the lenses were packaged.”

Infections

“Exposure to this bacterium may pose a risk of eye infection or irritation and one case has been reported in the UK where a user developed an eye infection,” the statement reads.

A similar warning was also issued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
