A financial contribution of up to 500 euros per month to pay the rent of the new home. The announcement came directly from Matteo Salvini, deputy prime minister and minister of infrastructure and transport. “This autumn there will be an announcement from the MIT with a contribution of 500 euros per month for the payment of rent by separated or divorced parents. I have removed the ISEE and replaced it with the Irpef up to 35 thousand euros, because we need to help people who work, not those who don’t work or work illegally”, said Salvini.
Government funding
The ministry is still working on the decree, but a 60 million fund is expected to be spread over the three-year period 2026-2028. We therefore estimate around 20 million per year for the measure, for an initial audience of around 5 thousand people already in the next few months. The objective is to offer a contribution to the separated or divorced parent to be used to pay part of the rent, to help those who “often, after a bad separation, a bad divorce, lose the house on which they are perhaps still paying the mortgage and with this also lose the right to welcome their children at least on the weekend” (Salvini dixit).
The official announcement has not yet been published, but some details have already emerged. One of the key requirements is the condition of a separated or divorced parent, to which is added the non-assignment of the family home owned and the presence of at least one dependent child up to 21 years of age. The amount, at least in intention, covers 50% of the rent costs, up to a maximum of six thousand euros for 12 months (therefore 500 euros per month).
The requirements for the contribution
According to what Salvini anticipated, the government is thinking about an Irpef income limit of 35 thousand euros per year: the ISEE will not be used as a parameter. According to what can be read on the ministry’s website, to benefit from the support you will naturally need a regular rental contract and the lack of ownership of other properties within a 50 kilometer radius of your old home. The contribution cannot be combined with other rental subsidies, and the application can be submitted online. “Once the Ministry of Economy has released the expected resources, priority will be given to the regions with more separated or divorced parents and with a greater housing emergency”, it continues.
Only with the publication of the notice will it be possible to know who will actually obtain the rental bonus for separated parents. Until that moment, any element or detail cannot be considered definitive.
