The cap on Eni’s petrol and diesel prices will remain in force until the end of 2026. The confirmation comes from CEO Claudio Descalzi, after a telephone conversation with some newspapers, and was reiterated to Ansa by a spokesperson for the group. For motorists, however, there is a distinction to keep in mind: the price containment mechanism will be extended, while the thresholds may be revised in the coming months.
Currently the limit is set at 2.25 euros per liter for diesel and 1.99 euros for petrol. The announcement therefore does not equate to a guarantee of maintaining these same values until December 31st.
What Eni announced
“We confirm that we will maintain the price cap concept until the end of the year,” the company said. On the roof level, however, Eni reserves the right to make an assessment during the period of application: the market trend, prices and supplies actually available will be monitored compared to the capacity of its logistics structure.
The group thus extends an intervention created with an initial duration of thirty days, leaving open the possibility of adapting it to supply conditions. The continuation until December gives a longer horizon to the measure, but does not automatically freeze the price lists.
The burden of supplies and refining
The measure was announced on 25 September and came into force on 28 September, with an initial cap of 2.19 euros per liter on diesel and 1.99 euros on petrol. From the outset, Eni had specified that the limit was linked to the tax relief on excise duties then in force.
From 6 October, with the end of the tax discount on diesel, the threshold on diesel rose by six cents, reaching the current 2.25 euros per litre. At the origin of the intervention, Eni had indicated the lower availability of refined products on international markets, linked to geopolitical crises, and the reduction in European refining capacity to explain the increase in the price of fuel at the pump. In the September press release, in particular, the group highlighted the closure of almost thirty refineries in Europe in the last fifteen years.
Also for this reason, in the confirmation of the extension, the reference to supplies and logistics accompanies that to quotations. For those who refuel, the duration of the initiative remains certain, while the level of the ceiling will have to be followed in the next updates: the mechanism continues until the end of the year, today’s values may change.
