Egyptian authorities have launched an investigation into a pornographic video shown on a giant advertising screen along a street in Giza governorate, southeast of Cairo. The episode, which occurred on Thursday 29 October, sparked chaos among motorists, who were shocked by the images shown on the roadway, while the videos recorded by witnesses then literally flooded social networks.

The red-light video appeared on roadside billboards heading towards Sheikh Zayed City. Egypt’s Interior Ministry said the incident was linked to a hacker attack on an international provider of digital advertising services.
According to the ministry, the international partner’s website was hacked, causing the footage to appear both on the Giza screen and, simultaneously, on several other digital facilities in various countries.

The company responsible for the infrastructure officially declared that it had detected an unauthorized intrusion and communicated that an investigation is underway in coordination with the competent authorities. In the meantime, all screens have been turned off as a precaution. Investigators are now working to establish the origin of the footage and identify those responsible for the cyber attack.
