Marathon runner at 92 and Coni rewards him: an example for everyone
Antonio Rao He is 92 years old and is a marathon runner. Word rigorously combined with the present and the future because, just under a month ago, on the occasion of the last marathon in Rome, it reached the finish line of the canons 42km and 195 meters in 6 hours and 44 minutes and next year has already promised that it will return. Thus could already be enough to tell his story and his formidable enterprise. But there is more: that of Rome is not the first marathon that ends. Also in the capital last year he ended up in 6 hours and 54 and two years ago he had scored the world record for the over 90 in 6 hours and 14 minutes category. Calabrian from Polistena and Romano’s Roman has been running since he was 14 years old. With the tank top of the Thoroughbred Athletic Club he trains three times a week and, even if not in perfect physical condition, last month had decided to start the Rome marathon because he wanted to honor the thirty years. Mission accomplished and yesterday the National Council of the Coni, on the proposal of President Giovanni Malagò, conferred him the bronze star with sporting merit “in recognition of your great passion and commitment dedicated to sport and for the extraordinary goals achieved in your career”. A prize that is also a wonderful manifesto on Quato Sport can improve the quality of life. And it is enough to listen to Antonio Rao to realize it: “For me, sport means everything- he tells in a video on social media- when I run I am free, free from the problems that life gives you. By running I don’t think, I think only of having fun and being together with the others. This is my life and 92 years I would like to be an example for everyone: young, big and elderly … stop me? I don’t think about it until the Lord helps me …”.
