Heart rate detection
On board the Apple Watch Ultra 4 we find the new Health Sensing System. Going into detail, thanks to an optical sensor equipped with larger and more efficient green LEDs, Apple Watch Ultra 4 now measures heart rate every five seconds. This continuous passive measurement provides more detailed information about the user’s fitness and physiological state.
HRV (Heart rate variability), a key indicator of stress and recovery, is now measured up to 24 times more often and can be viewed in a new section of the Beat app. Apple Watch Ultra 4 offers two distinct variations of HRV to help you better understand your health. Recovery HRV is better suited to identifying daily signs of stress and recovery, while overall HRV helps you get a broader overview of your health, including cardiovascular health.
Preparation function
Apple Watch Ultra 4 hosts the new Preparation feature that analyzes recent activity, training load, vital signs and sleep quality to help the user understand how energetic they will be for the day. Preparation provides a score from 0 to 10. In this way, the user can decide how to approach the day at the office or the workout at the gym. The score updates throughout the day with new data, reflecting, for example, intense training or a change in vital signs.
Autonomy
Apple Watch Ultra 4 offers more than two days of battery life, up to 50 hours. In Energy Saving mode, it offers up to 84 hours of battery life. Charging is faster than ever: 15 minutes are enough to have up to 18 hours of extra battery life.
For tracking outdoor workouts, the new Extended Workout mode offers up to 25 hours of battery life with regular GPS location and heart rate readings, 25% more than the previous model. For even longer sessions, Max Extended Workout allows Apple Watch Ultra 4 to track runs, walks and hikes for up to 45 hours, typically enough to run over 100 miles, while still taking GPS position readings every second.
Sound and Shazam recognition with the S11 chip
Thanks to the integrated microphone and the power of the S11 chip, Apple Watch Ultra 4 offers new functions that help the user stay aware of the world around them. Features include:
- Sound recognition, to alert deaf or hard-of-hearing people when it detects certain sounds, even if iPhone is not nearby.
- Shazam instantly recognizes the music the user is listening to and automatically displays the title and artist in the “Song Recognition” widget in the Smart Library, visible directly from the wrist.
More accurate step counting
The pedometer model has been completely redesigned with new machine learning algorithms to measure distances more accurately.
watchOS 27
watchOS 27 brings a series of new features to Apple Watch Ultra 4, including:
- A dynamic grid with icons of five apps recommended by Siri, the user’s most used and recently used apps.
- A new single tap gesture, convenient to use when you only have one hand free, which allows you to open a widget in the Smart Gallery by tapping once with your thumb and forefinger together. You can now use the double tap gesture to scroll through the Smart Gallery and select a widget with a single tap of your thumb and forefinger, all using just one hand.
- Smart Gallery widget suggestions appear when you need them most: for example, a suggestion from Maps indicating where your car is parked or a message reminding you of someone’s birthday in your close contacts.
- Perimenopause and menopause support in the Period Tracker app on Apple Watch and the Health app on iPhone.
Colors and straps
Apple Watch Ultra 4 is available with a black or natural titanium case. From this autumn, the line of straps will be enriched with new colors. The Trail Loop is now available in dark umber, sand and burgundy, while the Alpine Loop strap is available in sand, olive green and burgundy. Ocean bands are now made of a unique translucent silicone and are available in three new colors: translucent grey, translucent seaweed green and translucent black.
