But are infrared radiators really advantageous? The complete guide after months of use

Infrared radiators, also known as infrared radiant panels, are among the most innovative home heating systems currently on the market. Products with a modern design, reduced energy consumption, easy installation and smart features.

We therefore analyze in detail the functioning, characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of infrared radiant panels after months of use of one of the best-known models on the market.

Operation and advantages

Infrared radiant panels are able to work like the Sun, heating objects and users and without using a ventilation system. The infrared radiation emitted by the panel does not heat the air, but rather irradiates and heats the user objects, which in turn transmit heat to the environment.

Among the advantages of these devices we remember, first of all, the decidedly lower energy consumption compared to traditional electric heaters or old oil radiators and also lower than many air conditioners. In general, infrared radiant panels have a maximum consumption of around 1,200 W, while other traditional forms of heating can even exceed 2,500W. Furthermore, infrared radiators have a thermostat inside them capable of controlling the operation of the device based on the temperature set by the user, also reducing energy consumption.

Installation and maintenance are another strong point of these devices. They can be placed on the floor and easily moved, mounted on the wall or ceiling. There are also models equipped with a mirror and can be installed in the bathroom. Furthermore, as they have no moving parts, they do not require maintenance. Among the advantages we also mention the slim and modern design, with glass surfaces, the small size and the availability in various colours.

Many infrared radiators also offer smart features, with WiFi connection. They can therefore be remotely controlled via voice or smartphone app, are fully programmable and also allow precise monitoring of energy consumption.

Furthermore, these devices do not dry out or move air (an excellent feature for allergy sufferers) and are also silent.

Disadvantages

Among the disadvantages of infrared radiators we remember, first of all, the very low thermal inertia: when the panel is turned off, the perceived heat quickly disappears. The panel also radiates in a specific direction, creating a “heat cone”. It will therefore be important to install the radiator in a position free of obstacles, preferably in front of the user. We continue with the not very high power, useful for heating rooms with a maximum width of around 20 m2.

User experience

In recent months we have tested one of the most well-known infrared radiators on the market, theAeno Premium Eco. An interesting alternative to electric heaters or oil radiators, a valid help for the first cold weather and also excellent for strengthening the heating system already present in the house. A complete panel with a modern design, suitable for rooms up to 20 m2 and capable of reaching surface temperatures between 60 and 120 °C. In particular we appreciated the reduced energy consumption between 160 and 700W, the decidedly slim design and the complete smart controls. The comfort provided is excellent, but with a heating speed that is not very high (as there is no movement of air), comparable to that of aluminum radiators.

Prices

The prices of infrared radiant panels vary based on power. The cheapest models, of around 450 W, start from less than 100 euros, while the more powerful models (for example 1,200W) can be purchased for just over 200 euros.
