Camera falls onto the pitch from 20 meters: an operator grazes, match suspended

A near-tragedy occurred during the pre-World Cup friendly between the national teams of Hungary and Kazakhstan. During the match played yesterday, Tuesday 9 June, in the Nagyerdei stadium in Debrecen, one of the cameras suspended above the pitch suddenly fell onto the pitch. A tremendous impact, from a height of approximately 20 metres, which risked involving one of the operators positioned near the sideline.

The accident during Hungary-Kazakhstan

After the incident the referee was forced to temporarily stop the match. According to initial information reported by local media, smoke started coming out of the “spidercam”, probably due to a fault. As the images published on social media show, the support structure gave way, with the large camera crashing onto the green surface, a few meters from the operator and the area where the pitchside staff are located.

Luckily there were no injuries, but only a great scare for players, staff and fans. The suspension gave stadium workers the opportunity to secure the affected area and remove the remains of the facility.
