New increases at the pump. The Ministry of Business announces that on Thursday 10 September 2026 the average price of fuel in ‘self service’ mode along the national road network is equal to 2.077 euros per liter for petrol and 2.184 for diesel. On the motorway network, however, the average self-service price is 2.163 euros/l for petrol and 2.258 euros/l for diesel. Yesterday the green one stood at 2.067 euros with the diesel at 2.177 euros.
How prices have risen in a week
In short, it rains in the wet. And with the price of a barrel soaring, the increases are also felt by motorists, causing already very high prices to rise even further. Just a week ago, Thursday 3 September, petrol cost 2.039 euros per litre, while diesel 2.147.
The increase was 3.8 and 3.7 cents per liter respectively. The result is that a 50 liter tank of petrol increased by 1.90 euros in just 7 days, with diesel instead recording an increase of 1.85 euros.

The increases in prices since the beginning of the crisis and the new extension to the cut in excise duties
The comparison is even more merciless if you look at the cost of fuel before the Strait of Hormuz crisis. According to data from the Ministry of the Environment, at the beginning of March the average price of petrol was 1.67 euros per litre, with diesel at 1.72. The price increase was 40 and 46 cents respectively. Today a motorist pays over 20 euros more for each tank of petrol and 23 euros more for diesel, with a cumulative increase of almost +27%.
Today the government is expected to launch a new extension to the 17 cent discount on diesel. It will arrive “almost at the end of the month” said Transport Minister Matteo Salvini. The government’s intention is to introduce ad hoc discounts for specific categories, starting from October.
