Rebellin murder: German driver sentenced to 4 years

As Brigida Gatterethe mother of Davide Rebellin, commented on the first degree sentence issued by the judges of the Court of Vicenza which sentenced the German truck driver to 4 years in prison Wolfgang Rieke, accused of running over and killing the champion in 2022 cycling in Montebello Vicentino. Rebellin, who was 51 years old, was training along the regional road when he was hit by the truck driven by the man who did not stop to help. On the contrary. The elements collected by the Prosecutor’s Office, thanks to the investigation delegated to the Investigative Unit of the Provincial Carabinieri Command of Vicenza, with the acquisition of the recordings of the video surveillance cameras installed near the site of the accident, had also allowed the reproduction, from various angles, the dynamics of the accident and to ascertain the conduct of the German lorry driver who, also on the basis of the testimonies of the people who came to Rebellin’s rescue, after the investment, got out of the vehicle, approached the victim and immediately afterwards resumed his seat edge of the articulated lorry, moving away. For this reason, he was charged with vehicular homicide aggravated by escape. And now the first conviction, against which the German truck driver’s lawyers have already announced an appeal. His mother Brigida and brother Carlo found the strength to attend the last hearing of the trial in the Court of Vicenza. “We are moderately satisfied with the extent of the sentence inflicted, considering the laws on road homicide – explained Carlo Rebellin through his personal consultant -. The Vicenza Prosecutor’s Office carried out important work, and the accused also served eight months in prison, a very rare event in these circumstances…”. The 64-year-old German was convicted of vehicular homicide aggravated by the escape but the judge recognized the generic mitigating circumstances, having compensated the cyclist’s family with 825 thousand euros. The truck driver was not present in the courtroom, also as a result of the serious stroke that struck him last May which also led to the revocation of his house arrest.
