“We did it”, “We did it”. Thus Democrat Gina Hinojosa celebrates a historic milestone: she is the first Hispanic governor of Texas. With his election in the midterms, Republican rule ends after more than 30 years. The success of the Dems in Texas is double because there is also the conquest of a seat in the Senate with James Talarico.

Who is Gina Hinojosa
Gina Hinojosa is 52 years old. Born in McAllen, Texas, she is a lawyer. He defeated outgoing Republican governor Greg Abbott, who led the state of Texas for three terms.
Having entered politics to prevent the closure of her son’s public school, Gina Hinojosa now becomes the first person of Latin origin to govern the state. His father, Gilberto Hinojosa, a former Cameron County judge, led the Texas Democratic Party for thirteen years.
Hinojosa was one of the surprises of this election cycle. He seemed to have little chance when he announced his candidacy a year ago. She built the comeback with a campaign that she herself defined as “populist”, focused on the defense of public schools and support for working families, with little support from the Democratic Party. He attacked Abbott for his support of big fortunes, technological giants and data centers, tapping into the discontent with Donald Trump. He also denounced the lack of controls on raids by Ice, the federal immigration agency.
“I never thought about getting involved in politics. I am a mother who loves her children, believes in their teachers and in Texas public schools,” she said in her victory speech.
Tonight, I make a solemn promise to every single Texan. Whether you voted for me or Governor Abbott, or felt so betrayed by a broken politics that you didn’t vote at all.
Hear what Texas said today, loud and clear: Your government belongs to you. And as your governor, I will never forget it. There will be no special set of rules for the wealthy and powerful. No looking the other way when someone in my own party does wrong.
The trust you have placed in me tonight is not a blank check. It is a sacred responsibility. And I intend to earn it every single day.
