Google Meet can no longer be used: what to do with the app now

Starting from last Friday 18 October, the application Google Meet it can no longer be used by users: this is not a temporary malfunction, but rather its replacement with the most recent version already made available to everyone online.

A transition that took place on tiptoe, which was realised, among the first, by the members of the working group of the 9to5google.com portal: the editors were trying to participate in a meeting remotely when, after activating the old platform , have been informed of the change. “You can no longer use this version of the Meet app”is the writing at the top that has appeared to anyone who has found themselves in a similar situation in recent days. “One is available new app of Google Meet. Use new features like reactions and the ability to call other Meet users directly”the note continues: at the bottom of the message the “Get it” button, and a little further down the latest advice to all users “After installing the new app, uninstall Meet (original).”

After about two years of work, modifications and improvements, therefore, Google has decided to abandon the older version of its famous application, completely supplanting it with the more recent one: an evolution known and awaited exclusively by those who have been following the story for some time . For everyone else, the surprise has arrived, easily remedied by clicking on the button below the notice from the Mountain View giant.

Before the full replacement, the two apps were both available for download on the Play Store: on the one hand the “Google Meet (original)”, while on the other a simple “Google Meet”, i.e. the only version that will continue to work. Google obviously invited all users of its services to download the most recent one, highlighting the additional features that distinguish it, such as reactions and the possibility of making direct calls to users.

As mentioned, this is a process that started two years ago, in 2022, when Google decided to merge the two applications Duo And Meet as they are very similar to each other: the first, always the most widespread, has transformed into “Google Meet”, the second into “Google-Meet” (original).

This step was implemented with the aim of not creating confusion among the millions of users who used the two applications. The final phase of this journey arrived a few days ago, with the definitive disposal of the old “Meet”, the one renamed “original”.
