The attacker, according to what was reconstructed by New York Post, was killed after being joined by some gunshots fired by the police.

Armed with a machete

The attack occurred on Saturday 11 April around 9.50am local time (3.50pm in Italy). According to initial reconstructions, an 84-year-old man, a 65-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman were hit with a cutting weapon. A witness reported that the attacker would have used a large weapon, probably a machete. All three injured people were rushed to hospital and are in critical condition. The police then intervened and shot the suspect who had entered the carriage of an armed train, CNN reports, citing a source informed of the attack.

The mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, confirmed the death of the attacker in a post on social media. “Officers shot the man when he did not drop the machete. He was later pronounced dead,” he wrote. “I am grateful to the NYPD for the timely response and for preventing further violence. The three victims were transported to hospital and, fortunately, are in stable condition. The NYPD is conducting an internal investigation and, as happens in all incidents involving the use of firearms by an officer, will publish the footage of the cameras worn by the officers”, he concluded.
