"He weighed 15 kg and left no hope, but we removed it"

Record intervention at the Oncological Reference Center of Aviano (Pordenone), where a malignant abdominal cancer of over 15 kilos of weight and 40 centimeters wide. Such a voluminous mass that as they report from the health structure conditioned the patient’s life “leaving no hopes for healing”.

The operation was completed on Friday 25 July and entailed “the complete removal of an abdominal liposarcoma of the size of more than 40 centimeters and with a weight greater than 15 kilos that originated from the great omento (a fold of the peritoneum that descends like a stomach apron and covers most of the abdominal organs, ed.)”.

The previous one and 16 liters of liquid in the abdomen

From the oncological center they explain that “when it comes to giant masses, reference is made to formations that fully occupy the abdomen, causing symptoms such as pain, swelling, digestive difficulties and compression of the neighboring organs”. It is also a very rare type of tumor so much that in the literature, they support from the structure of Aviano, they would be described no more than 20 cases in the world, “none of which of this size”.

Last year the same medical team had performed another record intervention, removing a 15 kg sarcoma on a 75 -year -old patient. However, Friday’s operation would have been even more complicated for “the associated presence of over 16 liters of liquid within the abdominal cavity”.

The doctor: “picture to the limit, we accepted the challenge”

“The preoperative investigations indicated the presence of a framework at the limits of the operability”, explains the director’s manager of the surgery team, Claudio Belluco. “We accepted the challenge and this has repaid us: the mass, in fact, was completely removable, even without having to sacrifice other organs. The rarity of this type of tumors requires a scientific dissemination of the case, since this experience may also be useful for the treatment of other patients with similar clinical paintings. From the human point of view, the drama of the situation has emotionally involved all the staff of our Institute, who I want to thank the team: fundamental for the success of the intervention “.
