The port of Dover, one of the main maritime links between the United Kingdom and Europe, remained partially isolated for a few hours this morning, Saturday 5 September. Hundreds occupied the streets leading to the ferry terminal, many of them dressed completely in black and with their faces covered by balaclavas and hoods.

The videos published during the morning show groups of people marching along the roadways, forming a human chain in some places and blocking the passage of vehicles. Among the slogans “Stop the boats” and “England till I die”, (“Stop the boats” and “England until I die”).

According to the reconstructions published by Guardian and other British newspapers, the mobilization appears linked to “Patriot Platform”, an organization founded by Danny Thomas, also known as Danny Tommo. Thomas posted a live broadcast of the protest online. The Patriot Platform website itself presents itself as a space to transform one’s beliefs into “lawful, purposeful action” and invites supporters to put “boots on the ground”.
The protest was also relaunched on social media by Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, known as Tommy Robinson, a British far-right exponent, who shared several videos of the blockade and invited other people to reach Dover.

The British government condemned the incident. A Home Office spokesperson reiterated that the right to peaceful protest is fundamental, but contested the behavior of participants and the inconvenience caused to travellers. “No arrests were made” in Dover by the police, who intervened to disperse the crowd of hooded people who blocked the British port this morning in an anti-immigrant protest. In a statement released today, Kent Police explained that they intervened “in response to a spontaneous protest. Traffic was flowing normally and all those involved had left the scene by midday”.
