How to vote
States in the balance
The focus is now on a few key states – Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina And Wisconsin – whose results will be decisive for the final victory. These “swing states“, known for their ability to swing between Republicans and Democrats, could prove crucial. Pennsylvania, for example, could require a recount if the difference between the two leading candidates was less than 0.5%.

When will the result of the US elections be known?
The vote counting process in US presidential elections is notoriously complex and requires patience, given the need to accurately verify and count every single vote. As a rule, votes cast directly on election day are counted first, followed by early and postal votes. This walkthrough may take a long time well beyond election nightespecially in such a close race, highlighting the challenges inherent in counting in narrow margin of victory scenarios, which can lead to recounts and legal challenges. Both Democrats and Republicans have deployed lawyers at polling stations in swing states and a hail of appeals and challenges is likely.
As a result, the officialization of the results may be affected delays notable. History has already seen episodes in which the official nomination of the winner was postponed by days or weeks compared to the day of the vote. The most recent example dates back to 2020 electionswhen the extended counting of postal votes, due to the Covid pandemic, delayed the official announcement.

Election officials supervise the voting and counting process with great care, ensuring the authenticity of every vote. While some states, like Michigan, have sped up early vote counting, the prospect of recounts and legal challenges remains real given the numerous pre-election lawsuits already filed.
The result could be clear already around 3 am (Italian) only if one of the two candidates surprisingly has a good margin in three or four key states.
What time are the exit polls?
The first exit polls should come out around 11pm Italian time. They will give a first indication of the voting trend, but nothing more because in several states the polls will still be open for a few hours. We will certainly soon know what the average turnout was, which voters went to the polls based on sex, age and origin, all data that usually allow statistical agencies to give some indications.
The highlight of the evening will come around midnight, when the polls close in the seven key states where the shutters are lowered between 1 and 4 in the morning (Italian time). To be precise:
- Georgia closes at 1:00,
- North Carolina at 1:30
- Pennsylvania at 2:00,
- Michigan between 2:00 and 3:00
- Nevada at 4:00
- Wisconsin and Arizona at 3:00
If Kamala Harris is ahead in Georgia and North Carolina, it is possible that she will prevail in the end. However, if Trump were to come ahead, then the race would still be in the balance. Harris’ success depends on the counting of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, but these are the states that are usually slowest in counting.
