The Day against Violence against Women is celebrated in the next few days. And we believe there is no more worthy and necessary occasion. It would take 365 per year. And we’re not kidding.
Instead, we felt like joking yesterday, while we were walking through a well-known social network and we came across a billboard with the words «Why are you wearing makeup? I like you like that” (which is the imaginary phrase of a possessive man to his partner). Claim: «If he tells you it’s VIOLENCE» (which is the imaginary conclusion of whoever created the advertising campaign).
We, who were left behind when saying something like that was a compliment – and if anything it is body shaming to tell a woman that she doesn’t look good without makeup – we were surprised. If this is violence, we thought, everything is violence. And after that, what is left to say?
But we, deluded that it depends only on the situation and the tone, are not reliable. And so we asked some colleagues what they thought. And their answers raised curious questions.
But if I say “Come on, I’ll take you shopping”, is that kidnapping? And «My mother’s risotto is better», is it a crime against honor? And “Come here my kitten”? Abigeato?
Doubt.
