In Helldivers 2, the "Park of Tyranny" arrives on Super Earth

Helldivers 2 is undoubtedly one of the video games that has caused the most buzz in 2024. The cooperative sci-fi shooter has put hundreds of thousands of players in the role of elite soldiers, the Helldivers, defenders of Super Earth in a hostile galaxy full of enemies ready to do anything to deprive humans of fundamental values such as freedom and “controlled democracy”.

The world created by the Arrowhead developers is a parody of the authoritarian regimes that are often found in science fiction media, with obvious references to sacred monsters such as Starship Troopers and proposed in a parodic key. And so, the Helldivers launch themselves onto dozens of different planets, literally shot into capsules from ships in orbit, ready to defend or liberate territories from the threat of the Automaton, a legion of sentient robots, and the Terminids, insectoid aliens. Both factions, these, which the propaganda of the Super Earth points out as evil (“socialist robots” And “insects fascists”) and dedicated to the destruction of the absolute goodness represented by human domination.

The narrative is driven by the players themselves, whose victories and defeats add up to one collective effort aimed at completing the “Major Orders”, which continue the story of the Second Galactic War. Major events are announced via in-game communications, and one of the most recent ones has aroused particular interest in the community.

A Bile-Titan and some Terminis Swarm warriors

The leaders of Super Earth, in fact, reported to the heroic Helldivers that “our intrepid Xenoentomologists have conducted the first of many sample collections and are already making great strides in understanding the extraction and exploitation ofAND-710”. This element is produced by the decaying bodies of Terminids and is the primary energy source of the human domain. “The lessons learned in the past from the failure of the Terminidi farms have been applied to ensure the safety of the Reserve”, continues the note from the High Command. “The population of Terminidi is monitored at all times by SEAF guards (the army of Super Earth) and surrounded by electric fences above and below ground. And in the unlikely event of a containment breach, i nuclear bombings are set to activate automatically”.

So far nothing new. The Helldivers have repeatedly conducted operations to destroy swarms of aliens that have escaped from the reserves and multiplied at exponential levels. It seems, however, that the rulers of Super Earth have not learned from the problems of the past. The communication, in fact, mentions a new “Tyranny Park”, which will be open to “adventurous citizens ready to pay well” to see the dangerous creatures up close. The initiative is defined as “exciting” and fundamental to contribute to “fund future research and deepen our citizens’ understanding of the horrors of Tyranny”.

Anyone who has spent at least ten hours on this game has already guessed how it will end: escape of the Terminides, hundreds of deaths, cover-up by the authorities and praise for the Helldivers who will intervene heroically to protect democracy. Or perhaps this narrative gimmick will take an unexpected turn.

After all, there is still a third enemy faction missing, the Enlighteneda technologically advanced alien race nearly exterminated by humans in the events of the first game, whose return (and likely revenge) seems imminent.
