For decades theIran has relied on Hezbollah and other terrorist groups as its first line of defense against Israel. But now that the Jewish state has inflicted unprecedented damage on the Tehran-led axis, problems arise. The Israeli air strikes have wiped out the leadership of Hezbollah, dealing a devastating blow to the plans of Iran, which in recent weeks has strung together a series of catastrophic failures on the security front, just think of the killing of Isma’il Haniyeh, deus ex Hamas machine.
But against the regime of the ayatollahs, dissent is increasingly stronger and internal divisions are increasingly evident. The missile attack on Israel was organized and conducted by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps despite opposition from the Iranian president, the New York Times revealed. Masoud Pezeshkian. In recent days the latter had repeatedly asked to avoid escalation, fearing an open conflict.
Well, the attack against the Jewish State reached the culmination of a harsh tug-of-war at the top of the Iranian institutions, with the Revolutionary Guards – in favor of a high-profile demonstration – which would ultimately convince the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to approve their plans. The fractures in the regime are graphically represented by Pezeshkian, who was not informed of the attack until shortly before it began.
There wait-and-see strategy against Israel has split Iran in recent weeks. According to several leading members of the regime, starting with the Revolutionary Guards, not having responded immediately to the killing of Haniyeh and that of General Abbas Nilforoushan represented a serious miscalculation. Nasrallah’s elimination further divided Iranian forces, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who reportedly complained to his aides that “Iran’s moderation” had been interpreted by the country’s adversaries as a sign of weakness.
Until a few hours before the missile attack on Tel Aviv, Pezeshkian had tried to advocate maximum caution. What he said during a speech to the United Nations was emblematic: on that occasion the president had expressed his willingness to collaborate in reducing regional tensions. Words bluntly panned byconservative wingprotagonist in recent days of vehement attacks against the president and his government. At that point, the Armed Forces would have obtained the green light from Khamenei for the missile attack, which had already been planned for weeks.
The division in Iran is visible to the naked eye and the head-on clash with Israel could leave a mark. It cannot be ruled out that one of the objectives of the Jewish State is precisely that of further weaken the regime’s stability of Tehran, already tested by internal tensions. In other words, Israel could provide the decisive contribution to leading to the implosion of Iran. Anything but randomappeal by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the Iranian people: “When Iran is finally free, and that moment will come much sooner than people think, everything will be different. There is no place where Israel cannot go to protect its people. The regime is leading you towards the abyss but our two ancient peoples, the Jewish people and the Persian people, will finally be at peace.” Clearer than that…
